Sit down with me in a little cafe…

and I’ll tell you about my art and my life as a high school art teacher in Asia. It was through that wonderful profession that my students taught me five ways art impacts our world.

  • It gives us a way we can tell a redemptive story of hope, beauty, safety, goodness, and recovery, and reach the world in a way that causes people to contemplate truth.
  • It allows us to expreass emotion that we could not do any other way.
  • It allows us to have an actual physical place in this world where our art stands as a testimony of beauty.
  • It allows us to know a fellow artist in a deeper way as we work alongside each other.
  • It gives us a fulfillment and satisfaction in creating something new because we are imitating the great Creator.

Because life has its seasons, I am currently residing in Michigan and have taken on the role as a fine artist for CORD Ministries. I am also teaching art at several community art councils and serving on the Art in the Alley Committee to bring an art walk experience to my local town. In every season, I hope to live out these five ways through my art.

Kintsugi is a centuries old Japanese method of repairing broken pottery. The pieces are glued back together using a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold. It is an art form performed by master craftsmen. The gold-filled cracks represent a new message of beauty coming out of the flaws, or, actually, enhanced by the flaws. It is not broken; it is more precious.

To me, Thailand is in the pottery, the plants, and the moss from the rainy season. I think this was the first time that I realized that I could use messy, seemingly uncontrollable soft pastel sticks to create a piece full of creamy, layered depth of color.
